The upcoming exhibit, Ciudad Fragmentada (Fragmented City), consists of photo-based works by internationally recognized Cuban artist José Manuel Fors, depicting the multiple layers of Havana’s crumbling architecture and its resilient people. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition in the San Francisco Bay Area, and he has prepared a considerable amount of new works for this show. The exhibit will be on display at the Krause Center for Innovation (KCI) Gallery, Foothill College, November 7 through November 26, 2012. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, November 8, 7–9 pm. The artist will attend the opening reception and will provide a brief introduction to the exhibit.
Fors uses photographic images to explore the themes of memory and nature. In Ciudad Fragmentada, Fors examines the deterioration of Havana city through his signature style of tiny photographic images. “Between the architectural fragments,” Fors said, “can be found its people, objects, and documents, all things that make up the city.” Also included, are works from his series Atados de Memorias (Bundles of Memories), which consist of photographs and documents that belonged to his family.
Fors’s exhibit is part of a creative collaboration organized by Foothill College Photography Professor Ron Herman, who led professional research trips to Cuba for local photographers in 2010, 2011, and 2012. “This exhibition is just one of the many activities we’ve engaged in with our Cuban counterparts,” explains Professor Herman. “In Cuba, we lectured, reviewed portfolios, exhibited our work, and photographed alongside Cuba’s leading photographers. These activities played a vital role in bringing our two photo communities together to exchange ideas and information. I hope we’ll see more creative collaborations with Cuban artists in the future.”
